The UK government has spent an incredible $273 million on Isambard-AI, the most powerful supercomputer. This machine is about to become a member of the world’s most exclusive group of supercomputers. Its several NVIDIA superchips enable it to process 200 quadrillion calculations per second. The University of Bristol will be the home of Isambard-AI when it launches in the summer of 2024.
Supercomputer Features:
The brains behind Isambard-AI, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, have employed 5,448 NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips. This indicates that Isambard-AI can perform over 21 exaflops of AI magic, or over 21 quintillion operations per second, for AI tasks like building extraordinarily large language models. The University of Bristol claims that it will outperform the fastest supercomputer in the UK by a factor of ten. This digital marvel will be housed in a self-contained, self-cooling data center at the National Composites Center in Bristol.
Partnerships and Collaborations:
The UK’s AI Safety Summit made this significant revelation, bringing together influential people from around the globe, including the US, to discuss the potential risks associated with AI and its future. Isambard-AI intends to collaborate with other supercomputers in the UK to become smarter. According to Simon McIntosh-Smith of the University of Bristol, it will rank among the most intelligent AI systems for open science once it’s operational.
